Portland Harbour is located beside the Isle of Portland, Dorset on the south coast of England. It was established in 1849 and when completed in 1872, its 520-hectare (1,300-acre) surface area made it the largest human-made harbour in the world. Today, it remains the fourth largest human-made port. For over one hundred years, the harbour was renowned as a major Navy Base.
Today, Portland is a thriving commercial port, which handles cruise ships, cargo ships, and bunker vessels. It also maintains a strong relationship with the Royal Navy and the Royal Fleet Auxiliary, as well as being home to just about every type of water sport. The harbour was host to the 2012 Olympics and it has some of the best sailing to be found in the world.
