Port Chaplain: Jonathan Bayliff

Our Portland Port Chaplain is Mr Jonathan Bayliff, who joined the Royal Navy at 17 years of age as an apprentice. He decided to follow Christ at 18 and discovered his purpose as a missionary on British warships. After completing his training, he was drafted to Polaris submarines in Faslane and served a number of years before getting married, leaving the Navy and starting a family. He moved to Weymouth, after being called there to serve the Lord, and later joined the police, from which he retired in 2011. Jonathan has been living on the island for 11 years and became Port Chaplain in 2018. He has visited numerous ships and frequently also visits the Bibby Stockholm barge to offer discipleship training and welfare support to asylum seekers accommodated on board. Jonathan loves to share the Gospel and equip others to do the same. Winning souls to follow Jesus is his life’s mission.

Portland Information

Portland Harbour is located beside the Isle of Portland, Dorset on the south coast of England. It was established in 1849 and when completed in 1872, its 520-hectare (1,300-acre) surface area made it the largest human-made harbour in the world. Today, it remains the fourth largest human-made port. For over one hundred years, the harbour was renowned as a major Navy Base.

Today, Portland is a thriving commercial port, which handles cruise ships, cargo ships, and bunker vessels. It also maintains a strong relationship with the Royal Navy and the Royal Fleet Auxiliary, as well as being home to just about every type of water sport. The harbour was host to the 2012 Olympics and it has some of the best sailing to be found in the world.
