John Honore, Port Chaplain

John started work as Port Chaplain in the port in 1995. Born in St. Lucia he is the son of a seafarer. He left school and followed in the steps of his father, going to sea at the age of 16. As a result of a visit from former SCFS port missionary Walter Burrell in June 1975 he surrendered his life to Jesus Christ.

Jake Beaty, Ship Visitor

Jake  shares,”The Lord called me to preach while I was sailing as third mate on the USNS KISKA. I attended the US Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point, NY, and worked at sea for a decade, including as a volunteer captain with Friend Ships. In 2024 the Lord called me to serve at the Clover Pass Community Church, my first pastorate. Jennifer, my beloved wife since 2012, is from Texas, and we met in Cochabamba, Bolivia where she ran an orphanage for eleven years. We have eight children. I am so delighted we can be part of ministering to seafarers!”

Steve Speights, Ship Visitor

Steve Speights has lived in SE Alaska (Ketchikan) since 2008, and has lived in Alaska since 2000. Steve and his wife, Cindy, have taken many cruises, and enjoy interacting with the ship’s crew. Steve’s spiritual gifting is acts of service. Steve serves his church by helping with the videos and projections on screen. Steve also knows the importance of prayer, so he felt praying for and with crew members would be a good.

Abby Oberg, Ship Visitor

Abby Oberg moved to Ketchikan in January 2026 to serve as the Missions Coordinator at Clover Pass Community Church. Having grown up in West Africa as the daughter of missionaries, she developed a love for different cultures and people from around the world. She was excited to learn about the ministry opportunities aboard cruise ships, where she can connect with crew members from many nations. Abby hopes to be a light for Christ and an encouragement to those she meets.

Dawn Hill, Ship Visitor

Dawn Hill is married to Tim and has two adult children. She resides in Illinois, where she is on staff with Intervarsity Christian Fellowship ministering to university students most of the year. However, Dawn grew up in Ketchikan and in the summer of 2025, she met SCFS Chaplain John Honore. As soon as she heard that his job was to go on board ships to share the love of Jesus with the crew through encouragement, free Christian literature, clothing and other items, her first question was, “Can you take others with you?” Less than a week later Dawn was gathering other friends from Clover Pass to join a team of volunteers who could encourage John in his faithful work and go on the ships with him as often as possible. Dawn has helped coordinate the team long distance, along with John and Clover Pass Community Church’s sweet mission’s coordinator, Abby Oberg. Dawn plans to continue returning to minister to Seafarers through SCFS – Ketchikan as many weeks of each summer as she can, because God has placed a deep love for seafarers in her heart.

Ketchikan Information

Ketchikan Port is a cruise port located in Southeast Alaska’s Inside Passage. During the cruise season, approximately 20 vessels call at the port each week. The port has four berths situated along Front Street in downtown Ketchikan, providing direct access to the town centre and nearby services.

Ketchikan is known as the “Salmon Capital of the World” due to the abundance of salmon in surrounding waters and the city’s long‑established fishing industry. The waterfront supports a range of maritime activity, including float planes, commercial fishing vessels, recreational craft, and port operations, resulting in a consistently busy working harbour.
