RNLI’s 200th Anniversary

RNLI’s 200th Anniversary

The Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) was founded in 1824 and is the largest of the lifeboat services operating around the coasts of the UK, Ireland, the Channel Islands and the Isle of Mann. The courage and commitment of the brave volunteers has continued on throughout the years. RNLI has saved more than 146,000 lives at sea since launching it's first life boat.

To mark the RNLI's 200th Anniversary, special events have been taking place.

On Sunday 26th May 2024, it was a privilege for our Belfast Port Chaplain, Sam Cowan and his wife Pauline, to attend and take part in the 200th Anniversary Service for the RNLI in Portaferry, Co Down. Representatives from the local churches participated in the event. Also present were the Lord Lieutenant of Down, Mayor of Ards and North Down, the area MP and local Councillors. Members of the local RNLI stations in Bangor, Portaferry and Newcastle came to mark the occassion.
It was encouraging to see around 200 locals attending the service which was held in the local Community Centre.
