The Limerick based SCFS team are Louis, Gordon and Sybren. They all volunteered to
work with SCFS in ports on the Shannon Estuary, Co Limerick in early 2024.
The Shannon Estuary is extremely deep in some parts, as much as 35m. With rail and
roads developments it is a fast-growing international port area with the potential for
some of the larger ships docking here including cruise liners.
Limerick port is in the city and is convenient for visiting. Foynes and Aughinish are 40
min away and tend to have more ships. There are also plans for an LNG port near Tarbert in Co. Kerry
The reception in the ports and visiting the ships has been very welcoming. It is
also great to have the positive support of friends and churches in the area.
Meeting crews from all over the world has been exciting and challenging. It is a blessing to
offer friendship and gifts including Bibles and literature in so many different languages.
The provision of materials from a variety of sources has been very helpful. Having
hand knitted gifts shows love and is a door opener to conversations.
Gordon met Sebastian from the Philippines in Foynes onboard Agia Ioanna where he
enjoyed lunch cooked by Benji. The visits give the opportunity to invite crew members to church and share faith in Christ. There have been personal times to pray
with crew members and share God’s word. Sebastian said that his wife
would love to see his photo on our site... A special "Hi! To all the family."
Providing internet hot spots and SIM cards where crews have had no WiFi or contact
with family for weeks is a blessing.
