Honouring Merchant Seafarers on Merchant Navy Day

SCFS was honoured to take part in the Merchant Navy Day ceremony hosted by Lisburn & Castlereagh City Council at Lagan Valley Island, Northern Ireland.

The event brought together representatives of the Merchant Navy, Lisburn Sea Cadets, civic leaders, and guests to recognise Merchant Navy Day.

The Red Ensign was raised the Deputy Lieutenant for County Antrim, Shane O’Neill, as a mark of respect and remembrance for those who have served their country in times of war and peace.

Merchant Navy Day is marked annually on 3 September to recognise the vital contribution of merchant seafarers and to remember those who lost their lives during the First and Second World Wars, often facing extraordinary dangers while transporting essential supplies.

Our Belfast Port Chaplain, Pastor Sam Cowan, was privileged to take part in the ceremony by leading the prayers. AC John of Lisburn Sea Cadets read a message from His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh to mark Merchant Navy Day. It was also a pleasure to meet with Alan Martin and many others attending this special event.

We extend our thanks to Mayor Councillor Brian Higginson and the Council for their kind invitation to participate in this important occasion, which serves as a  reminder of the dedication, sacrifice, and ongoing contribution of merchant seafarers around the world.
