The cruise ship season is well under way in Belfast, bringing many opportunities to meet and encourage seafarers from across the world. We are very grateful to the port staff, ship agents and security teams who work alongside us and make these visits possible. Their help, welcome and practical support enable us to access the ships and continue this ministry among the crews.
Sam has recently enjoyed a number of encouraging ship visits, with many meaningful conversations and opportunities to share Bibles, study materials and Christian friendship.
On the Queen Anne, he met Nhani and Ener. Nhani leads the fellowship on board and asked for a Study Bible to help him in that role. Sam was delighted to give him a Thompson Chain Reference Bible, along with some study guides. It was also a joy to meet Ener, who attends the fellowship too.
“Thank you so much Pastor Samuel Cowan for the wonderful gift you gave me. It touched my heart deeply, and I am very grateful for your kindness, your time, and your ongoing spiritual support.”
On other visits, Sam met crew from Germany, Zimbabwe, Paraguay, the Philippines and Romania. Bibles and New Testaments were gladly received, including 3 Tagalog/English New Testaments. Some crew said they would use the Tagalog/English New Testaments to help teach their children English.
Magnets and puzzle books were also taken, offering simple but welcome encouragement to those working far from home. Sam appreciated the warm welcome from the Crew Purser, the crew, and the security staff on the gangway, who were expecting him and already had his pass ready.
Another visit brought Sam back on board one of his favourite ships. Although the Captain he had known previously had moved on, and much of the crew had changed, it was encouraging to be welcomed by name. Some of the security team remembered earlier visits, which highlights how relationships are built over time through regular ship visiting. Within the first half hour, several Bibles and magnets had already been taken, and there were good conversations with crew members.
We thank God for these opportunities, for open doors on the ships, and for all who help us serve seafarers in Belfast.
