SCFS Supports the Launch of the Seafarer Pledge

On 1 July 2026, the Merchant Navy Welfare Board (MNWB) held a special event to mark the launch of the Seafarer Pledge. The event was hosted and sponsored by Norton Rose Fulbright at its offices on the South Bank in London, with Danny Yarker representing SCFS.

Inspired by the Armed Forces Covenant, the Seafarer Pledge sets out a shared commitment among UK maritime-focused organisations to recognise, value and support UK seafarers in their everyday lives. It is an initiative that honours the vital contribution of the UK’s Merchant Navy and reinforces the importance of welfare, dignity and practical support across the maritime community.

The Seafarer Pledge – recognising and respecting seafarers

We pledge to recognise and respect seafarers whose skill, professionalism and service sustain our way of life
and
connect us to the world.

Seafarers work globally, often far from home and under demanding conditions. Their actions underpin global trade,
national resilience and the prosperity of our communities.

We honour the service, heritage and continuing importance of the Merchant Navy and those at sea, and pledge to promote safe,
fair and respectful working environments founded on equality, teamwork and mutual support.

Through this Pledge, we affirm the vital role of seafarers in global commerce and society, committing ourselves
to enhancing their dignity, opportunity, well-being and long-term prospects.

The event was hosted by Sharon Coveney, MNWB Deputy CEO, and Steven Jones, Maritime Consultant, who has been a driving force behind the Pledge. Together, they explained how the initiative was developed and how it will work in practice. The event was well attended, bringing together representatives from major maritime charities, welfare organisations and industry partners.

SCFS is honoured to be a signatory to the Seafarer Pledge. While the MNWB Seafarer Pledge focuses on UK seafarers, SCFS’s commitment extends to all seafarers and their dependants, regardless of nationality, political opinion, religion, culture, language, gender, sexual orientation or ethnic origin, wherever they are in the world.
