VE Day 80th Anniversary

I was privileged to be invited to a VE Day 80th Celebration on behalf of SCFS via the Merchant Navy Welfare Board and the Wellington Trust.

Together with my cousin Philippa we enjoyed the 40's theme celebration with a drinks reception on the quarter deck, wartime songs, an interesting talk from the director of the Wellington trust, and Winston Churchill's VE Day address to the nation. There was a Glenn Miller style band and a sumptuous tea provided by a London WI.

I was particularly interested in HMS Wellington's history because she served all through the war, becoming an escort for Atlantic convoys and protection against U-boat threats. Because of her work and the many lives saved, she became known as ‘The Good Shepherd’ and at the end of the war she was still intact!

I reflected on how Our Good Shepherd who actually did give His life for the sheep, has saved millions and is now risen and exalted to The Highest Place and given a Name above every name, that at The Name of Jesus every knee should bow. What a privilege to bow to Him now!
